Sensors for monitoring drinking water quality across the network
Drinking water quality monitoring does not stop at the outlet of the treatment plant.
Across distribution networks, monitoring key parameters provides regular measurements at strategic points throughout the infrastructure.
Installed on a bypass line, MetriNet sensors make it possible to adapt the parameters measured to the requirements of each monitoring point.
Monitoring closer to the field
Reservoirs, pumping stations and strategic points throughout the distribution network are all locations where multi-parameter monitoring can complement regulatory controls and laboratory analyses by providing more regular insight into changes across the network.
A comprehensive range of water quality sensors
MetriNet sensors can measure a wide range of parameters:

- free chlorine
- combined chlorine
- total chlorine
- turbidity
- pH
- conductivity
- 4-electrode conductivity (4E)
- oxidation-reduction potential (ORP)
- dissolved oxygen
- fluoride
- dissolved ozone
- chlorine dioxide
- peracetic acid
- hydrogen peroxide
- pressure
The parameters monitored can therefore be adapted to the characteristics of the network and the requirements of each measurement point.
Modular water quality sensors for multi-parameter monitoring at each measurement point
Not every point on the network requires the same parameters to be monitored.
MetriNet can accommodate up to 4 sensors on a single panel, with configurations of up to 8 sensors available on request.
A modular platform
With 15 interchangeable sensors, each measurement point can be configured according to the water quality parameters that need to be monitored and adapted as network requirements evolve. For example, a single installation can combine free chlorine, turbidity, pH and conductivity to provide multi-parameter monitoring.
Analysis with very low water consumption
Installed on a bypass line connected to a pressurised pipe, the MetriNet system requires only a small amount of water to perform all the selected measurements. Once analysed, the sampled water can be returned to the network or discharged, depending on the installation configuration. This low water consumption makes it possible to perform multiple water quality measurements while limiting the volume of water used.
The benefits of combining MetriNet + SOFREL for water quality monitoring
Combining Badger Meter’s expertise in water quality measurement with SOFREL’s expertise in telemetry brings measurement and data communication together within a single architecture.
Measurements from MetriNet sensors are acquired by SOFREL LogUp, S4W or DL4W-LP via Modbus RS485 and then transmitted remotely.

The solution provides:
- Simple and quick deployment, including at sites without a mains power supply
- Easy maintenance
- High energy autonomy thanks to the sensors’ low power consumption
- Accurate measurements
- Reliable transmission of measurement data
- Alerts when defined thresholds are exceeded
FAQ: Multi-parameter sensors and drinking water quality monitoring
What is a multi-parameter sensor for drinking water quality?
Multi-parameter sensors make it possible to monitor several water characteristics at a single measurement point. MetriNet offers 15 interchangeable sensors for measuring parameters including chlorine, turbidity, pH, conductivity, oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), dissolved oxygen and pressure.
Which drinking water quality parameters can be monitored?
MetriNet sensors can measure free, combined and total chlorine, turbidity, pH, conductivity, 4-electrode conductivity, oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), dissolved oxygen, fluoride, dissolved ozone, chlorine dioxide, peracetic acid and hydrogen peroxide, among other parameters. Temperature can also be monitored depending on the sensor used.
Where can drinking water quality sensors be installed?
Installed on a bypass line, MetriNet sensors can be deployed at various strategic points throughout drinking water distribution networks, including reservoirs and pumping stations.
Can several parameters be measured at the same location?
Yes. A MetriNet panel can accommodate up to 4 sensors, and up to 8 on request, enabling several water quality parameters to be measured at a single monitoring point.
How can water quality measurements be transmitted remotely?
MetriNet sensors communicate via Modbus RS485 with SOFREL LogUp, S4W or DL4W-LP telemetry equipment. These devices acquire the water quality measurements and transmit the data remotely.
Can MetriNet be installed at a site without a mains power supply?
Yes. When connected to a SOFREL LogUp or DL4W-LP data logger, MetriNet sensors can be remotely powered by the telemetry equipment. This combination enables water quality measurements to be collected and transmitted remotely at sites without a mains power supply, including isolated points on the network.
