Implementation of data loggers for continuous diagnostics of wastewater networks ; Self-monitoring of wastewater networks

Self-monitoring of wastewater networks

The management of stormwater is a major challenge for operators, both in terms of flood prevention and environmental protection. It requires continuous monitoring of wastewater collection networks. With increasing soil artificialization, natural stormwater infiltration is decreasing, leading to a significant rise in urban runoff during heavy rainfall.

Wastewater networks, often combined, are not designed to handle such excessive volumes. To prevent wastewater treatment plants from becoming overwhelmed, combined networks must be able to overflow temporarily into the natural environment. Storm overflows located upstream of treatment plants play a crucial role in regulating these excess water volumes.

Although there is no obligation to collect and treat stormwater, operators must still comply with self-monitoring of wastewater networks requirements. A continuous assessment of wastewater networks is essential to control and manage discharged water volumes, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.

Robust data loggers for reliable Combined Sewer Overflows (CSO) Self-monitoring

During rainy episodes, close attention is paid to combined sewer overflows. The data loggers monitor Combine Sewer Overflows (CSO) to determine numbers and durations of overflows (overrun of a height threshold, or moisture detection via an overflow sensor). As soon as an overflow is detected, the measurement frequency is automatically increased for the entire duration of the event to ensure more precise monitoring.

The Data Loggers perform flow rate calculations and generate daily reports of water volumes released into the natural environment. An alert in the event of threshold overrun can be sent to the agent on standby duty and to the control PC. All self-monitoring data are sent daily in order to populate the self-monitoring registers.
