Each year, the city of Rennes invests heavily in the thermal renovation of its buildings to control the energy consumption of high-demand sites and reduce its CO2 emissions.
The city’s municipal assets include 300 sites such as schools, daycare centers, gymnasiums, socio-cultural facilities, as well as administrative and municipal buildings.

Controlling heat and energy consumption as a primary objective

The city aims to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030. In addition to thermal renovation, its efforts also focus on connecting sites to district heating networks, using green gas and wood for decentralized boiler rooms, and incorporating renewable energy sources.
SOFREL S4TH – A fleet of 150 buildings remotely regulated by SOFREL equipment
To further reduce its energy consumption, the City of Rennes has been investing for many years in SOFREL S500 and S500TH remote management equipment to regulate and optimize the operation of its heating systems. Today, no fewer than 150 sites are remotely managed.
For the past two years, the city has been increasingly deploying SOFREL S4TH remote regulation units to secure and control its heating installations.

In your opinion, what are the main advantages of remotely regulating your installations using SOFREL equipment?
G : For us, the main advantages of remote management are:
- Optimizing building operations and managing occupancy schedules
- Monitoring faults and interventions
- Heating scheduling
- Meeting expected energy savings
Compared to the older SOFREL equipment still in use on some sites, what are the advantages of the new SOFREL S4TH?
- G : The advantages of the SOFREL S4TH lie in the integration of regulation and remote management in a single product. The inclusion of a web server that allows remote monitoring of installations through diagrams and graphs on any device (smartphone, tablet, and PC) is appealing and simplifies the work of our teams. Finally, I would say that the simplified programming made possible by the built-in standardized automation workshop and its HVAC library is another feature we particularly appreciate. It makes it easier to improve the regulation of our installations.
Are cybersecurity and reliable communication important to you?
- G : Yes, with the S4TH and its all-IP communication (Ethernet and 4G), we are anticipating the phase-out of analog lines while ensuring reliable and cybersecure communication with our equipment. The management of user profiles and access from a remote server also allows us to track the agents who have accessed the devices. With 40 years of collaboration, beyond the company’s proximity, it is especially the attentiveness to the City’s needs, the quality of the technical hotline, and French manufacturing that are appreciated by the City of Rennes Utility Service.
